Visit by Rushanara Ali

MP Rushanara Ali ‘gives an hour’ to mentoring charity in Tower Hamlets

This week Tower Hamlets MP Rushanara Ali dropped in on a mentoring project run by local children’s charity ReachOut following an invitation from charity National Youth Agency to find out more about youth work in communities.

NYA called on MP’s to spend an hour with local youth workers in their constituency, as part of Youth Work Week.

At the ReachOut project, which has been running in partnership with Cayley Primary School for the past nine years, children aged ten and eleven are offered weekly one-to-one mentoring from university students who encourage character development through fun stimulating group activities as well as providing academic support.

This week the young people were writing and delivering award acceptance speeches with their mentors, a literacy and drama activity. The creativity of the young people shone through as they came up with imaginary awards ranging from recognition for building a time machine to winning a chocolate eating competition!

Rushanara Ali joined in with the mentoring and then spoke to the group about her role as an MP, joking she would make school hours longer if they weren’t nice to her! Both mentors and young people were thrilled that she had taken the time to come and meet with them and answer their questions.

During the visit, Rushanara Ali praised the valuable work happening with young people in the area and in particular the skills gained through youth work.
