Cayley Principles of Teaching

Our principles of teaching set out a clear, shared vision for what great learning looks like in every classroom. They reflect our commitment to high expectations, strong relationships and evidence-informed practice, ensuring that every pupil is supported to succeed and thrive.

At the heart of our approach is a positive learning culture, where pupils feel safe to participate, take risks and aim high. Teachers establish clear routines, maximise participation and create classrooms where effort, resilience and aspiration are consistently reinforced.

We prioritise the quality of instruction, ensuring that new learning is carefully explained, broken into manageable steps and modelled with clarity. Pupils understand what success looks like and are given frequent opportunities to practise, apply and deepen their understanding.

Strong subject mastery underpins all teaching. Teachers draw on deep subject knowledge to sequence learning effectively, address misconceptions and build pupils’ knowledge over time. High standards of literacy and communication are promoted across the curriculum, enabling pupils to express their thinking with confidence and precision.

To help learning “stick”, teachers regularly revisit prior knowledge, use retrieval practice and provide structured opportunities for both guided and independent practice. This ensures that knowledge is retained, connected and readily applied.

Our adaptive teaching approach ensures that all pupils can access challenging learning. Through thoughtful scaffolding, responsive teaching and careful questioning, teachers meet the needs of every learner, supporting all pupils—including those with additional needs—to make strong progress.

Finally, assessment and feedback are integral to our practice. Teachers continuously check understanding, address misconceptions and provide meaningful feedback that pupils can act upon. This creates a responsive learning environment where gaps are quickly identified and closed.

Together, these principles ensure that every lesson is purposeful, inclusive and ambitious—empowering all pupils to think hard, achieve highly and develop a lifelong love of learning.
