Modern Foreign Languages (French)

Vision

At Cayley, we provide a high-quality languages education that fosters pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world. Learning French enables pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to others both in speech and in writing. Through language learning, pupils develop confidence, cultural awareness and an appreciation of different countries and traditions.

Intent

Our aim is to develop pupils’ enthusiasm for languages while building strong foundations in speaking, listening, reading and writing in French. We want pupils to feel confident communicating in another language and to understand how language learning helps them connect with the wider world.

French is taught from Year 3 to Year 6, in line with the National Curriculum, ensuring pupils experience consistent progression as they move through the school.

Implementation

French is taught weekly for approximately 30 minutes, providing regular opportunities for pupils to practise and develop their language skills.

We use the Language Angels programme to support high-quality and structured teaching. Each year group studies six units per year, with each unit containing six lessons, including an end-of-unit assessment. Lessons include interactive activities, differentiated tasks and opportunities for speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Teachers follow the provided planning and lesson resources to ensure consistency and progression across the school. Lessons are adapted to support all learners, including pupils with SEND and EAL, through visual aids, scaffolded activities, flexible groupings and additional support where needed.

Pupils record their learning in French books, allowing them to see their progress over time.

Impact

Through our French curriculum, pupils develop increasing confidence in communicating in another language and gain an understanding of different cultures and perspectives. They build key language skills and develop curiosity about the wider world.

Progress is monitored through:

  • ongoing formative assessment during lessons through questioning, observation and reviewing work
  • end-of-unit assessments for each topic
  • pupil voice, learning walks and staff feedback to evaluate the quality of teaching and learning.

As a result, pupils leave Cayley with a positive attitude towards language learning, a strong foundation in French and the confidence to continue studying languages in the future.
