Geography

Vision

At Cayley Primary School, our Geography curriculum inspires curiosity about the world and its people while equipping pupils with the knowledge and skills to understand their local area, the United Kingdom, and the wider world. Pupils explore locations across all continents, investigate global and local issues such as climate change and sustainability, and make connections between human and physical geography. Through Geography, pupils develop transferable skills, cultural awareness, and a sense of responsibility as global citizens, preparing them for future learning and life beyond school.

Intent

Our Geography curriculum aims to foster curiosity, critical thinking, and an understanding of how people and environments interact. Pupils develop knowledge of places, geographical concepts, and global issues while learning to ask questions, interpret data, and draw conclusions.

We encourage pupils to:

  • explore their local area, the UK, and countries across the world
  • investigate environmental and social issues
  • make links between human and physical geography
  • develop skills in map reading, fieldwork, and geographical enquiry

Geography also supports pupils’ understanding of global responsibility and cultural awareness.

Implementation

Pupils complete three Geography units each year, with lessons sequenced to ensure clear progression of knowledge and skills. Lessons are typically one per week, lasting around 60 minutes, although the timetable may be adapted to suit each year group. Pupils record their learning in humanities books, often across a two-page spread.

Lessons follow a clear structure:

  • retrieval of prior learning
  • introduction of key vocabulary
  • teacher modelling and explanation using sources, maps, or timelines
  • guided practice with support
  • independent application in books
  • challenge tasks to deepen understanding and encourage higher-order thinking

Teachers plan using CUSP resources alongside atlases, globes, digital maps, and fieldwork equipment, incorporating opportunities for cross-curricular links, trips, and enrichment activities.

Lessons are adapted to meet all pupils’ needs, including scaffolding, visual prompts, adapted maps, chunked tasks, pre-teaching vocabulary, and extension opportunities for higher attainers.

Impact

Pupils develop a strong understanding of places, environments, and global issues while building skills in enquiry, analysis, and critical thinking. They gain cultural awareness and an understanding of sustainability and social responsibility.

Progress is assessed through:

  • formative methods such as questioning, observation, and retrieval tasks
  • summative assessments at the end of each unit through quizzes and written outcomes

Monitoring includes book looks, lesson visits, planning checks, and pupil voice to ensure high standards and consistent teaching across the school.

As a result, pupils leave Cayley with a solid foundation in geographical knowledge, practical skills, and the confidence to explore and engage with the world around them.
