PSHE
Vision
At Cayley Primary School, we are committed to empowering pupils to develop lifelong aspirations, set meaningful goals, and embrace strong personal values. Our PSHE curriculum gives every child the opportunity to build the skills and knowledge they need to thrive both now and in the future. We believe that pupils who are healthy, confident, and emotionally secure are more likely to succeed academically and lead fulfilling lives, creating a positive, lifelong cycle of wellbeing and achievement.
Intent
The PSHE curriculum is designed to develop pupils’ personal, social, and emotional skills, supporting their wellbeing, relationships, and sense of responsibility. Pupils learn to:
- understand themselves and their emotions
- build positive relationships with peers and adults
- make safe, responsible choices in everyday life, including online
- develop resilience, empathy, and respect for others
- set goals and develop strategies to achieve them
Through PSHE, pupils gain the knowledge and confidence to navigate challenges, make informed decisions, and contribute positively to their school and community. Internet safety is an integral part of the curriculum, helping pupils to recognise risks online, make safe choices, and use digital technology responsibly.
Implementation
Pupils complete six PSHE units each year using the Jigsaw Program of Study, one unit per half term. Each lesson lasts 30–45 minutes per week for six weeks and can be taught in blocks or weekly sessions depending on timetables. Pupils record their learning in Jigsaw Journals, which include a front cover, Knowledge Organiser, and Learning Legacy self-assessment grids. These journals are sent with the pupil to the following year to support continuity and reflection.
Lessons follow a clear structure provided on the Jigsaw online portal, including lesson plans, slides, and resources. Pupils engage in discussion, reflection, and self-assessment, completing a Learning Legacy grid at the end of each lesson. Teachers facilitate opportunities for pupils to reflect on their learning, share thoughts, and build confidence in expressing their ideas.
Lessons are adapted to meet the needs of all pupils, with scaffolding, visual prompts, differentiated discussion activities, and adult support provided where necessary. Units include age-appropriate content on internet safety, covering topics such as safe use of devices, recognising risks, online etiquette, and how to seek help.
Impact
Pupils develop strong personal, social, and emotional skills, building resilience, empathy, and self-awareness. They learn to make responsible decisions, manage emotions, form positive relationships, and navigate the online world safely.
Progress is assessed through:
- formative assessment during lessons via questioning, observation, and discussion
- pupil self-reflection using the Learning Legacy grids
- peer assessment during collaborative activities
Monitoring includes termly learning walks and reviews of pupils’ Jigsaw Journals with the subject lead to ensure high-quality teaching, engagement, and consistent progression across the school.
We strive for our pupils to leave Cayley equipped with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to navigate life’s challenges, maintain wellbeing, act responsibly online, and thrive as caring, informed members of society.
